Icelandic Saga Protagonist’s Pool Rebuilt

Constructions on Gudrúnarlaug, Gudrún’s Pool, have begun in Saelingsdalur valley in the Dalir region, west Iceland, in the place where the ancient pool named after Gudrún Ósvífursdóttir, the protagonist from Laxdaela saga, was located.

Builder Gudjón Kristinsson from Drangar is supervising the project; the floor of the pool is currently being condensed with clay, reports. According to, the original pool is believed to have been hit by a landslide in the 17th century.

Gudrún Ósvífursdóttir was famed for her beauty and married four times. The pool is the scene of a love story. With the new pool, Dalabyggd municipality invites visitors to bathe in the location where Gudrún used to bathe while soaking in history.
