Icelandic Saga Hero Becomes Comic Superhero

Comic authors Ingólfur Örn Björgvinsson and Embla Ýr Bárudóttir have published their third comic based on the old Icelandic Njáls Saga, which is almost twice as long as their previous stories. Their most recent comic, The Hero, features Gunnar á Hlídarenda.

“These books have been extremely well received,” Björgvinsson, who resides in Barcelona, told Fréttabladid. “We were a little surprised because we didn’t think Icelanders liked comics much, but we were proven wrong.”

“This is our retelling of Gunnar’s story in this form and creating it was a lot of fun,” Björgvinsson said. “We were not too dependent of the original text.” The books are drawn in a European comic style and are supposed to appeal to a broad age group.

Björgvinsson and Bárudóttir have already begun working on their fifth comic based on Njáls Saga, which will probably feature Hallgerdur langbrók, Gunnar’s treacherous wife, and her adventures.
