Aníta completed the race in 2:01.14, .32 faster than the second-placed competitor, Olena Sidorska from Ukraine.
A week earlier, the 17-year-old Icelandic athlete set a new record when she won the 800 meter event at the World Youth Championships in Donetsk, Ukraine, slicing half a second off the previous record. As a result, Aníta now holds both the European and World titles and is the most successful Icelandic athlete to date.
Aníta’s coach, Gunnar Páll Jóakimsson, says they are looking at competing in the adult European Athletics Championships next year, Fréttablaðið reports.
