Icelandic Runner Comes Second in Europe Cup

Icelandic athlete Aníta Hinriksdóttir placed second in the 800-m run at the Prague 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships today, qualifying for the semi-finals. Aníta completed the run in 2:01:56 minutes, thereby setting a new Icelandic record and a new European record in her age category.

Aníta, who recently turned 19, was by far the youngest contestant in the run and her achievement has garnered considerable attention. Her coach Gunnar Páll Jóakimsson told Vísir that Aníta was congratulated by many after today’s run.

Russian runner Yekaterina Poistogova won the race.

In February, Aníta set a new Icelandic and European record with 2:01:77 minutes.
