Icelandic Runner Comes Fifth in 800-m Final

Young Icelandic athlete Aníta Hinriksdóttir ended up in fifth and last place in the 800-m final at the Prague 2015 European Athletics Indoor Championships yesterday. On Friday she set a new Icelandic and European record in her age category.

Yesterday, Aníta started out by taking the lead but was overtaken in the last stretch. She crossed the finish line at 2:02:74 minutes, while Selina Buchel from Switzerland won the race at 2:01:95 minutes, Vísir reports.

“My main goal was to make the final and I’m very satisfied to have achieved that,” Aníta told Fréttablaðið. “I’m pleased with the tournament overall and it was a good experience.”

Another Icelandic contestant, Hafdís Sigurðardóttir, placed 12th in long jump with 6.35 meters, which didn’t suffice for the final. “It was a bit of a bummer but I’m fairly content,” she told Vísir. “[Competing] was fun … and I’m proud of my achievement.”
