The Icelandic Red Cross recently dispatched two volunteers to the Norwegian Red Cross medical camp in Chautara, Nepal, one of the areas worst affected by the April 25 earthquake, RÚV reports.
Lilja Óskarsdóttir, nurse practitioner, is an experienced Red Cross delegate who has in the past worked at various emergency medical centers following natural disasters, such as in Pakistan, Haiti and the Philippines.
Additionally, Lilja spent several years working for the Red Cross in South Sudan and in Ethiopia.
Ágústa Hjördís Kristinsdóttir, emergency nurse practitioner, will be departing on her first mission for the Red Cross. She has worked at Landspítalinn University Hospital in recent years, and is working on a graduate degree in environmental and natural resource studies, with a focus on the environmental dangers of developing areas.
Two other Icelandic Red Cross volunteers have spent time in Nepal this year helping the survivors of the earthquake.
Nurse practioner Helga Pálmadóttir and psychologist Elín Jónasdóttir both recently returned from Chautara, while electric technician Ríkarður Már Pétursson has extended his stay through August.
Earlier this month, students, teachers and staff at Kárnesskóli, an elementary school in Kópavogur, held a charity run in collaboration with SOS Children’s Villages Iceland.
Runners raised a total of ISK 100,000 (USD 750; EUR 680), which will go towards rebuilding schools in Nepal that were damaged by the earthquake.
