Marines from the American vessel USS WASP lost to Icelandic football team Ragnan in a series of friendly matches last Saturday.
The Icelandic team was made up of well-known locals, such as councilor Gísli Marteinn Baldursson, lawyer Birgir Tjörvi Pétursson, Kristinn Vilbergsson, manager of bookstore Penninn, and Leó Hauksson, broker at KB Bank. Fréttabladid reports.
The teams also exchanged players for friendly basketball matches. Dave Edwards of the US Embassy in Reykjavík told Fréttabladid that the younger marines are interested in sport and practice football, basketball and handball on board the ship.
Baldursson of Ragnan said the marines were in good shape and the games were exciting. He believed the Icelander’s characteristic toughness paid off in the end, despite team USS WASP having a considerably lower average age that the Icelandic team.
The USS WASP, a US navy multipurpose amphibious assault ship, pulled a shore in Reykjavík harbor last Thursday in connection with the new American-Icelandic defense agreement. It is scheduled to leave Iceland today.
