Icelandic prisoner in the US returns to Iceland

Aron Pálmi Ágústsson, 24, who recently completed a ten-year prison sentence in Texas, returned to Iceland yesterday. The Rights Justice Freedom (RJF) campaign group in Iceland tried unsuccessfully to have him return to his home country sooner.

According to Fréttabladid, Ágústsson was convicted for sexually violating a young boy in 1997, when he was only 13. He served the last four years of his sentence under house arrest in Beaumont, Texas.

Ágústsson’s case first caught the interest of RJF when the local newspaper DV reported on it three years ago. Since then the campaign group has helped Ágústsson’s family in their fight to have him transferred to Iceland so he could complete his sentence there. Their efforts were fruitless.

Ágústsson will start studying in Iceland this fall.
