Icelandic President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson sent US President Elect Donald Trump a letter yesterday, congratulating him on his victory, RÚV reports.
A press release from the president reads:
“In his letter, the president stressed the deep-rooted cooperation and friendship between the two countries, and a long common history, dating back to when seafarers from Iceland and Greenland reached land in North America more than a thousand years ago. Ages later, thousands of Icelanders emigrated west, across the Atlantic, in search of new opportunities, as immigrants in free societies.
Even though the US is among the world’s largest democracies and Iceland among the smallest, the two nations share many important values; we wholeheartedly support the freedom of thought and expression, gender equality, and value equal rights of all citizens, regardless of skin color or religion.”
