Icelandic President Meets with Middle Eastern Heads of State

President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson met with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem on Wednesday morning followed by a afternoon meeting with President of the Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah, Grímsson’s first official visit to the Palestinian National Authority. Morgunbladid [05.09.2008] reports.

At the meeting in Jerusalem, Peres and Grímsson are said to have discussed increased collaboration between Iceland and Middle Eastern states as well as Iceland’s candidacy for the UN Security Council. Peres spoke extensively about the prospects for peace in the Middle East.

President Abbas invited President Grímsson to meet with him in the Palestinian National Authority capital of Ramallah to get to know the situation and hear from residents. Abbas spoke at length about past peace talks. Although the political situation in Israel and the selection of a new prime minister may slow progress, Abbas believes that considerable headway has already been made in many issues.
