Icelandic Population Rises to 319,575

On January 1st 2012, the population of Iceland was 319,575. That is an increase of 1,123 on the same time last year, mbl.is reports.

This amounts to an increase of 0.4 percent. The number of women increased quite a bit more than men, or 0.5 percent as opposed to 0.2 percent.

The population of the capital area increased by 1,253, or 0.6 percent, but was greatest in the Reykjanes peninsula with 0.7 percent, or 154 people.

The population decreased in four areas of Iceland. The most significant decrease was in Northwest Iceland, which lost 194 people, or 2.6 percent.

Considerable decrease was also detected in the West Fjords, which lost 82 people, or 1.2 percent, according to a statement from Statistics Iceland.
