Icelandic Population Continues Upward Trend

The population of Iceland at the end of 2017 was 348,580, according to new information from Statistics Iceland. RÚV reported first. The Reykjavík capital region counted a population of 222,590, while 126,000 live in the rest of the country.

Net migration was positive at 1,390 persons, the largest proportion of which are in the age group 20-29. Net migration among foreign citizens was positive at 1,280 persons, while for Icelandic citizens it was also positive at 110. More Icelanders in the age group 20-29 however, left the country than returned to it. Denmark was the most popular destination for Icelandic citizens moving abroad.

Poland was the country of origin for most foreign immigrants, or 890 individuals, while Lithuania came second with 250 immigrants originating in the country.
