Icelandic PM Shoe Story Most Read in Sweden

The story about Prime Minister of Iceland Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson meeting Obama and his Nordic counterparts in Stockholm in mismatching shoes—one dress shoe and one sports shoe—on Wednesday was the most read story in Aftonbladet, the largest newspaper in Sweden and the Nordic countries, yesterday.

Sigmundur told Aftonbladet, after the meeting with Obama, that “He is as likeable as we have seen him on TV.”

Assistant to Sigmundur, Jóhannes Þór Skúlason, told Aftonbladet that his foot had swollen up during the flight from Iceland to Sweden. Just before the meeting, the PM had to go to the Karoliska sjukhuset hospital to get antibiotics.

His foot was so swollen that his dress shoe did not fit and so he instead wore a sports shoe on the one foot. According to, Sigmundur has been suffering from a foot infection.
