Icelandic PM Resigns

Prime Minister Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson has resigned. He will remain chair of the Progressive Party.

The Progressive Party would like Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson to replace Sigmundur as prime minister, but Sigurður has been serving as minister of agriculture and fisheries. He is 54 years old, a veterinarian and farmer from South Iceland.

The Independence Party has yet to approve the choice of Sigurður as prime minister, according to mbl.is.

It’s not clear whether the government will remain in power until the end of the term.
