Icelandic pianist Víkingur Heiðar Ólafsson has signed a contract with Deutsche Grammophon, one of the world’s most respected classical record labels.
Yesterday, the company announced the January release of Víkingur Heiðar’a debut album, where he will play a selection of Piano Etudes by US composer Phillip Glass. The recording of the album, which took place at Harpa concert hall, has been completed.
Christian Badzura, Executive Producer of Deutsche Grammophon Artists and Repertoire, stated, “Víkingur is an exceptional pianist and curator. His performance, choices of repertoire and visions for recorded sound are a fresh breeze in the classical music world. Be it Scarlatti, Rameau, Bach or Glass, Víkingur’s interpretations sound timeless.”
Víkingur Heiðar posted this message on his Facebook page yesterday:
“I’m very happy to share this news with you.
It’s tremendously exciting to work with Deutsche Grammophon, whose legendary recordings have been so present in my musical life ever since I learnt how to operate my parents’ CD and LP players as a child.
I look forward to sharing my debut album, a tribute to Philip Glass for his 80th birthday, in January 2017.”
Other collaborative projects are planned between the 32-year-old Víkingur Heiðar and the record label, according to Deutsche Grammophon’s website.
