Icelandic Naming Committee Approves “Starr”

The Icelandic Naming Committee has approved Starr as a middle name, RÚV reports. It took two meetings for the committee to reach a decision on the name, which is considered to fulfill all the requisite conditions. The committee has also approved the names Ísdögg, Araminta, Arntinna, and Emely.

The ruling on the name Starr says the name is of Icelandic origin, same as the bird “starri” (En. starling). The noun starr can also means quarrel in Icelandic, while the verb að starra means to argue or to share. The word also appears as an adjective in Icelandic meaning stubborn or stiff.

All names given in Iceland must be approved by the Icelandic Naming Committee, a controversial institution.
