Icelandic MMA Fighter On Hiatus

Icelandic MMA fighter Gunnar “Gunni” Nelson doesn’t think he’ll be fighting anymore this year. According to an interview with MMA Fréttir, Gunnar wishes to give his head some time to recover after his defeat in July against Santiago Ponzinibbio.

Gunnar has already appealed the results, due to Ponzinibbio repeatedly poking Gunnar in the eyes, which gave way for a devastating knockout punch. He’s not sure when to expect the results of the appeal but considers it positive that they take their time to review the case.

The UFC banned Gunnar from participating in any more fights for at least 45 days, in order to recover from his injuries but it’s clear that Gunnar will be taking more time off to be safe.

Gunnar is Iceland’s most successful MMA fighter, currently competing in the Welterweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Ranked #11 in the official UFC Welterweight rankings, Gunnar has become celebrated all over the MMA world for his unique fighting style.
