Icelandic Media Enjoys Most Freedom

A new report from the organization Reporters without Borders indicates that journalists from Iceland and Norway enjoy the highest levels of freedom in the world.

Yesterday, the organization issued its index measuring the level of press freedom in 169 countries throughout the world. Among the indicators used to evaluate press freedom are level of censorship, access to information and to what extent journalists are threatened or even imprisoned, tortured or murdered, according to national radio RÚV.

According to the report, reporters from Iceland and Norway enjoy most freedom in the world while Eritrea ranked last in the survey, overtaking North Korea’s position.

All of the European Union member countries made it into the top 50 except Bulgaria (51st) and Poland (56th). Among the top ten nations in the survey are the Nordic countries, the US ranked 48th and the UK came in 31st.
