Today, on the birthday of one of Iceland’s best loved poets, Jónas Hallgrímsson, is Icelandic Language Day. The day will be celebrated with festivities in schools, institutions and companies.
Festivities include a literature conference for children and teenagers from the ages of 10 – 16 in Keflavík and the annual
“Big Reading Competition” held in primary schools throughout Iceland reports web portal Visir.
The minister of education will present the 10th annual Jónas Hallgrímsson Award to an individual who has “in a unique way contributed to the Icelandic language”.
On Saturday between 11 a.m. and 1:30 a.m. language symposium will be held at the University of Iceland. The subject of discussion is Icelandic language policy and the work of the Committee for the Icelandic Language.
