Icelandic Language Awards founded

The Icelandic Language Awards of the Educational Council of Reykjavík City were founded yesterday to be awarded to pupils in Reykjavík on November 16 each year, the Icelandic Language Day.

The purpose of the awards is to increase interest in the Icelandic language among the younger generations and encourage pupils to improve their knowledge of their native tongue, Morgunbladid reports.

Every elementary school in Reykjavík can nominate three pupils or a group of pupils who have reached good results in their study of Icelandic as their native language or as their second language.

Former President of Iceland, Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, is the patron of the awards.
