Icelandic investors interested in Newcastle FC

Icelandic entrepreneurs Jón Ásgeir Jóhannesson and Pálmi Haraldsson are currently negotiating with Mike Ashley, who holds a 90 percent share in the English football club Newcastle United, hoping to acquire a large share in the club.

If the investors acquire a governing share in the football club, Newcastle will be the second Iceland-owned English football club. The London club West Ham is owned by Icelanders Björgólfur Gudmundsson and Eggert Magnússon, Morgunbladid reports.

Newcastle United, based in Newcastle-upon-Tyne with its headquarters in St. James Park, has won the English championship title four times, the FA Cup six times and the UEFA Cup once since it was founded in 1892.

Last year the club became Intertoto champion, which is a European summer football competition.

Sam Allardyce, former manager of the Bolton Wanderers, took over as the manager of Newcastle this summer.
