Icelandic Hot Dogs Headed for US

If you’re one of those people living in the US who have a craving for SS hot dogs from Iceland, your craving may soon be satisfied. It appears they’ll be coming your way.

Sláturfélag Suðurlands, better known as SS, has plans to enlarge its factory in order to produce hot dogs for the US market, RÚV reports. The company, founded in 1907, runs the largest slaughterhouse in Iceland and is the producer of numerous meat products.

“Our goal is to obtain a full US license for the factory, making it the only factory in the country to hold such a license, so that we can, among other things, export the one and only SS hot dog to the US,” Steinþór Skúlason, CEO of the company, remarked.

There is a strong interest in SS hot dogs in the US, he stated. “I believe I have more than 100 requests from the US to purchase SS hot dogs, requests that we haven’t been able to fulfill, but now, that’s our goal.”

As part of the expansion plan, 24 row house apartments will be constructed for employees in Hvolsvöllur, South Iceland.

Steinþór Skúlason noted, “In our view, this is necessary in light of the expansion in the housing market, to secure the position of our employees… There’s a severe housing shortage.” The apartments will be 50 m2 (538 sq. ft.), constructed at three different locations in town.

Ísólfur Ingi Pálmason, director of the local council, predicts the first apartments could be ready early next year.
