Icelandic Grandmaster in Chess Beats Latvian Opponent

Icelandic grandmaster Hannes Hlífar Stefánsson beat Latvian grandmaster Normund Miezis in the seventh round of the MP Reykjavík Open yesterday. Bosnian grandmaster Ivan Sokolov is in the lead with six victories.

Stefánsson shares the second to fifth place with Ukrainian wunderkind Illya Nyzhnik, Igor-Alexandre Nataf from France and Abhijeet Gupta from India, Morgunbladid reports.

The eighth and second-last round of the MP Reykjavík Open will take place today. Admission is free.

The MP Reykjavík Open is the 25th Reykjavík chess tournament. There are around 100 participants from 22 different countries this year.
