Gudbjörg Gunnarsdóttir, goalkeeper for Valur, the Icelandic champion in both male and female football (soccer), rejected an offer to join the American soccer team FC Indiana yesterday due to more exciting projects at home.
“The most important factor in my decision is that [playing for FC Indiana] would not have fit the schedule for the Icelandic national team at all,” Gunnarsdóttir told Morgunbladid.
Gunnarsdóttir will likely become the primary goalkeeper for the national team after its current goalkeeper, Thóra B. Helgadóttir, announced she would quit yesterday.
Another factor in Gunnarsdóttir’s decision is the fact that Valur has qualified for the European Championship in Female Football and she would like to play for her team.
