Icelandic Glacial Water Pitted against Coca-Cola

Icelandic Glacial, which bottles natural spring water and is operated by Icelandic Water Holdings ehf., has been short-listed, along with Coca-Cola and Danone, which produces Evian, for Best Sustainability Initiative at this years Bottledwaterworld Awards.

The winner will be announced at the 2007 Global Bottled Water Congress and Awards in Mexico later this month, according to Icelandic Glacial’s website. Environmental issues and sustainablility are the main themes of this year’s congress.

“This nomination is especially important for our marketing in the US, which has just begun. It doesn’t happen every day that a little Icelandic brand is put on par with giants like Coca-Cola and Danone,” CEO of Icelandic Water Holdings Jón Ólafsson said in a statement to Vidskiptabladid, a daily business newspaper.

“An immense awakening in environmental issues has taken place in this business and those who are successful in sustainability, especially with regard to CO2 emissions, receive considerable attention,” Ólafsson added.

Icelandic Glacial recevied a certification from the US-based Carbob-Neutral foundation last June for its strategy on offsetting carbon emissions, including the usage of eco-friendly energy sources like geothermal and hydroelectric energy for its bottling facility in Thorlákshöfn, south Iceland.
