Icelandic Gaming Industry Prospers

As the gaming industry prospers in Iceland, a special organization, IGI – Icelandic Gaming Industry, has been founded.

The current industry leaders are CCP, maker of EVE Online; Betware, middleware provider for lotteries and gaming platforms and thirdly Gogogic, maker of online and mobile games. Shared revenue is expected to exceed 10 billion ISK in 2009. At least 10 companies are now a part of the industry, creating dozens of job opportunities.

Also, more companies are worth mentioning. Mind Games is a startup that is pulling neuroscience into games, seeing focus or relaxation as part of game play. Sauma Technologies, a Finnish company, recently opened a subsidiary office in Iceland with the intent to bolster its online development efforts.

Realising the enormous potential within the gaming industry, Icelandic universities are now offering courses, directly tied to game development, production, artificial intelligence and computer graphics. They have strong research departments where some projects are directly tied to games and gaming. All of this supports further growth for an already up-and-coming industry.
