Foreign Minister of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson traveled to China last week, accompanied by a trade delegation representing Icelandic Business and Industry.
During the minister’s he met with members of the Chinese government and learnt about the Icelandic businesses that are operating in China. The main goal of the visit was to deepen and widen trade and business ventures between the two countries in the coming years, as stated in a press release from the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
The Iceland-China free trade agreement will take effect tomorrow, July 1.
It is expected that trade relations will increase significantly once the agreement has entered into force. Gunnar Bragi met with China’s Minister of Commerce, Gao Gucheng, on Thursday to discuss specific economic topics such as cooperation in the field of energy, especially as regards geothermal. They also discussed cooperation in tourism, cooperation in oil exploration in the Dragon Zone, which lies in Icelandic waters, as well as possible exports of meat and dairy products to China.
