Icelandic football team plunges down FIFA list

The Icelandic male football (soccer) team dropped down 13 seats in one month on the International Federation of Association Football’s (FIFA’s) listing of the world’s football teams, reaching a historical low of 109.

Iceland’s strength is equal with Azerbaijan and slightly above Burundi, Rwanda and Syria, Fréttabladid reports.

Iceland’s worst result so far was 107th, which the team also earned when Eyjólfur Sverrisson was their trainer.

The Icelandic team had its best achievement in 1994 when it made it to the 37th place on the FIFA list under the guidance of Ásgeir Einarsson.

On June 6, Iceland suffered a great loss against Sweden, 5-0, in the 2008 European Championship qualifying round.
