Icelandic football player Ragnar Sigurðsson, who caught attention at the EURO 2016 in France this summer, has signed a two-year contract with the English football club Fulham, Vísir reports. Ragnar, who has played for the Russian club Krasnodar for two and a half years, told Vísir he is delighted to have joined the team. Playing in England has always been his goal.
Ragnar’s performance during Iceland’s game against England in France, which Iceland won 2-1, caught world-wide attention, but he scored Iceland’s first goal in the game.
The 30-year-old from the Árbær neighborhood in Reykjavík openly expressed his wish to join an English football team during the EURO 2016.
Fulham is in the Championship League, but Ragnar doesn’t deny his dream is to join the Premier League:
“There were teams that contacted my agent, but they were clearly never sure, because the offers never arrived. Fulham was the only club that presented a real offer. Therefore, the decision wasn’t tough. Fulham is a great club in a great city.”
Ragnar admitted that his dream was to get a chance with Liverpool, a club he has supported all his life. Liverpool ended up signing his namesake, Estonian Ragnar Klavan.
“As far as I know, I never came close to getting to Liverpool. But it was still somewhat of a blow for me that they should choose my namesake instead…and surely very funny,” Ragnar joked.
He spoke well of Krasnodar and his time in Russia: “They always knew my goal was to get to England. My time in Russia was great… it was good to get a chance to play on one of Russia’s best teams and in the Europa League as well.”
