Sunday May 31 is being touted as Obscura Day by Atlas Obscura, a website promoting the world’s hidden gems and little-known wonders.
On Sunday they have drawn together a collection of over 160 different events in 25 countries around the world—including two in the Westfjords of Iceland.
The day is intended to encourage people to go out in groups and explore hidden gems and unusual places in and around their own hometowns. “Obscura Day is a celebration of exploration and discovery, including everything from a sunrise falconry exhibition in the California desert to an excursion to the sacred Hindu caves of Goa Gajah, Bali to a private orchestral performance at the Robotic Church in Brooklyn, and much, much more,” organizer Megan Roberts says.
On Sunday at 15.30 the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft in Hólmavík will present an ancient evil-ridding invocation led by a traditional Icelandic sorcerer. Standard entry to the museum is ISK 900, and the invocation does not cost extra.
Also on Sunday, at 14.00, the Sea Monster Museum in Bíldudalur will present an afternoon of monsters; including a talk about them, a guided tour of the museum, scary stories and a look at sea monsters from around the world. Standard adult entry is ISK 1,000.
