Icelandic Contestant Forced to Pull Out of Ironman

Icelandic triathlon athlete Karen Axelsdóttir had to pull out of the Ironman Hawaii competition last weekend after falling ill. She threw up during the swim and bicycling events, lost six kilos of fluid and therefore had to receive intravenous nutrition at hospital.

“I was hoping it would pass. I knew after the swim that I was out but I wanted to finish and make it through the competition,” Axelsdóttir told Morgunbladid.

She finished the ocean swim, which was the first part of the competition, in one hour and 12 minutes and ranked 25th out of 82 contestants in her age category. She also completed the second segment, cycling, after which she ranked around 27th.

But she was unable to progress to the last segment of the triathlon, the marathon. “I was very disappointed about this happening because I was in excellent shape,” she concluded.
