Icelandic Composer Nominated for Oscar

Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhansson has been nominated for an Oscar for his music in The Theory of Everything, as confirmed in the last hour.

Jóhann is up against Alexandre Desplat, who is nominated for his music in The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Imitation Game, Hans Zimmer in Instellar, and Gary Yershon in Mr. Turner.

Jóhann is the sixth Icelander to be nominated for an Oscar: director Friðrik Þór Friðriksson’s film Children of Nature was nominated for Best Foreign Film, Björk and Sjón for Best Song for Dancer in the Dark and Rúnar Rúnarsson and Þórir Snær Sigurjónsson were nominated for their short film The Last Farm.

The Oscars will be held on February 23.

Jóhann’s music in The Theory of Everything earned him a Golden Globe last weekend. He was the first Icelander to win a Golden Globe. He has also been nominated for a BAFTA.
