An Icelandic couple in their twenties was arrested at Baraja International Airport in Madrid before Christmas, carrying from10 to 20 kilos of cocaine in their luggage. The couple has been involved with narcotics police in Iceland before.
Icelandic police authorities are watching the case closely but the case is being investigated by Spanish authorities.
The couple was arrested after arriving in Spain from Peru on December 17. Spanish police have revealed little about the case but according to visir.is the couple are known drug abusers in Iceland and have been sentenced here but have never been arrested for involvement in drug trafficking of this size before.
Sentences for drug trafficking of this magnitude are hard in Spain according to the Icelandic consul in Madrid, who has visited the couple at the prison where they are being held.
Spanish media recently reported that 30 kilos of cocaine taken by police in Portugal when two men were detained at the beginning of December was partly meant for trafficking iin the Icelandic drug market. The two men were not Icelandic and their nationality has not been revealed in the Spanish media.
