Icelandic Coach to Leave Danish Handball

The Icelandic coach of the Danish men’s national handball team, Guðmundur Þórður Guðmundsson, has decided not to renew his contract with the team when it expires on July 1, next year, reports.

“I have experienced many exciting things with the Danish national team, and especially [winning] the Olympic gold this past summer, which was the largest. But next summer, when my contract runs out, I have other plans for the future.”

Morten Stig Christensen from the Danish Handball Association thanked Guðmundur for his job for Danish handball the past three years:

“Guðmundur is an incredibly talented handball coach, and probably the only one who has made it twice to the finals at Olympic Games with two different nations. [Guðmundur was the coach of the Icelandic men’s national handball team when it won a silver medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.] When we first hired him, his goal was to win gold in Rio. That was an amazing accomplishment, which mattered much for Danish handball history. Guðmundur will always be remembered in Danish sports history.”
