“We managed to move up three seats on the world list and are very satisfied,” Haflidi Halldórsson, president of the Icelandic Master Chef Club, told Morgunbladid.
At the 2008 Culinary Olympics, the Icelandic chef team won the gold.
Twenty-seven nations competed at the World Championship in Luxembourg. This year Singapore earned the highest score and claimed the championship title, Sweden placed second and the US third.
The Icelandic team only used Icelandic ingredients. “We consider it our role to represent the country and nation and believe that what we’re doing can benefit food producers, exporters and the tourist industry,” Halldórsson explained.
According to Kastljós, the team brought two tons of food to Luxembourg, including Arctic char and lamb.
Judges not only give points for the taste and look of each dish but they also monitor whether the right work methods are used.
Approximately 50,000 people attended the show in Luxembourg and up to 6,000 thousand people dined on the food cooked by the international master chefs.
There was considerable demand for the dishes made by the Icelandic team, which sold out two weeks before the competition began.
The chefs celebrated the achievement by going out for dinner. “We are really grateful when someone can be bothered to cook for us,” Halldórsson commented.
The chef team is already planning for the future and has set the goal even higher for the next championship.
