Icelandic Broadcaster Apologizes for Nazi Comment

Iceland’s national broadcaster RÚV sent a formal letter of apology to the Austrian Handball Federation over the weekend after sports broadcaster Björn Bragi Arnarson commented during live coverage of the game that the Icelandic team were “like the Nazis … slaughtering Austrians.” Iceland won Saturday’s European Championship game 33-27.

The comments have caused outrage both in Iceland and abroad. The Austrian Handball Federation is investigating the matter, visir.is reports.

The letter of apology, which was written in English, has also been the subject of criticism due to a number of grammatical errors in it.

Iceland comes up against FYR Macedonia today.
