Icelandic Boxer Rolls Car into River

By Iceland Review

Gunnar Nelson, the UFC welterweight mixed martial artist, was a passenger in a 4×4 truck which rolled over into one of Iceland’s biggest rivers, Þjórsá, last weekend.

Gunnar’s manager and father, Halli Nelson, explained to Cagepotato.com that the roads were icy when the accident happened. “The pickup he was in [there were four people in the car and Gunnar was in the passenger front seat] went off the icy road and rolled down the hill three to four times.”

Gunnar escaped relatively unscathed but had to get around ten stitches in his arm. The accident could have been a lot worse, Halli said. “It (truck) ended up on its wheels in Þjórsá, this is Iceland’s longest river. It’s a glacier river with very hard current. If the car had gone one meter further into the river it would have hit deep water and the current would have taken it,” he said, adding that Gunnar will be ready to start training again soon.
