Icelandic Biker Offers to Take Crowe for a Ride

Australian actor Russell Crowe, who is currently in Iceland to shoot scenes for Darren Aronofsky’s Noah, recently tweeted that he had found it hard to go on a 20-kilometer bicycle ride in Reykjavík as the city is so “compact”, albeit “gorgeous”—like his wife.

María Ögn Guðmundsdóttir, an Icelandic national team member in cycling, stated that one can easily practice cycling in Reykjavík, adding that Crowe probably didn’t know where to go. She had just competed a 48-kilometer cycle when got hold of her.

“Russell should extend his horizon. He could take the so-called Reykjavík cycle, around the city, excluding [the suburbs] Grafarvogur and Grafarholt, which is approximately 22 kilometers. He could also do the big Reykjavík cycle, which includes Grafarvogur and Grafarholt and is around 50 kilometers,” María said.

“One can also cycle to Kópavogur, Garðabær and Hafnafjörður,” she added of neighboring towns. “We also often go to Álftanes, to the president and back, where there are good cycling paths.” The presidential residence, Bessastaðir, is on Álftanes peninsula.

María is currently practicing for the Icelandic cycling championship in August. She and her boyfriend, Hafsteinn Ægir Geirsson, are both on the national team and cycle 30-110 kilometers every day. “Russell is welcome to contact us,” she said.

Here is a map of cycling paths in the city.
