Icelandic Basketball Team Loses Games, Wins Hearts

The Icelandic national team in men’s basketball lost its final game at EuroBasket 2015 in Berlin yesterday, 111-102 in overtime against Turkey, placing sixth in Group B after the team’s first appearance at a major championship.

Iceland ended up losing all its games at EuroBasket 2015 but was considered to have performed bravely and passionately, standing up to much stronger teams.

Fibaeurope.com wrote of yesterday’s game:

“Turkey could do little to stop Iceland’s three-point scoring prowess as the Nordic team scored an eye-popping 48 of their 91 points in regulation from beyond the arc, on 16-of-37 shooting, to force overtime. But Turkey managed to make the best possible use of their size advantage and out-rebounded the Nordic team 53 to 31.”

“Turkey abolished a 10-point third-quarter lead but found an extra gear in overtime … in the entertaining high-scoring extravaganza.”

Vísir reports that basketball fans from all over Europe complimented Iceland on its efforts on social media yesterday, describing it as “The most colorful team of the championship,” and commenting, “We love your passion.”
