Icelandic authorities hold off on free movement of labor

Icelandic authorities plan to make use of a period of adaptation concerning the free movement of labor within the European Economic Area for citizens of Bulgaria and Romania, according to Minister of Social Services Magnús Stefánsson.

This means that citizens of those countries cannot come to Iceland to look for work without a prior work permit when Bulgaria and Romania officially join the European Union at the end of this year.

The adaptation period for the provisions to take effect is until 1 January 2009. RÚV online reports.
