Icelandic Alcatraz Swimmers Successful

The three Icelandic ocean swimmers, Benedikt Hjartarson, Árni Þór Árnason and Jón Sigurðsson, who participated in the annual swim from the prison island Alcatraz to San Francisco in the US on Saturday made it to shore in approximately 45 minutes.

“The swim went incredibly well and was perhaps easier than we thought it would be. We didn’t drift much off course and managed to swim in a rather straight line so we were able to finish in good time,” Benedikt told Morgunblaðið.

They didn’t run into any sharks either, which can be found in the San Francisco Bay.

The trip was planned on the occasion of Jón’s 60th birthday this year. Jón ended up winning an award in his age category.
