Icelandic Airports Close Because of Volcanic Ash

Keflavík International Airport was closed this morning because of the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. The wind direction has changed and the ash cloud is now blowing across southwest Iceland, although little or no ash fall is predicted in Iceland’s capital.

The closure affects all international flights of the Icelandic airlines, Icelandair and Iceland Express. Reykjavík domestic airport was also closed earlier this morning but flights to domestic destinations have now resumed, ruv.is reports.

The flight ban at Keflavík took effect at 5:30 am this morning. Some departure times were moved ahead because of it and arrivals will be redirected to other airports in Iceland. An Iceland Express plane with 137 passengers from Alicante landed in Akureyri last night.

Four Icelandair passenger planes from the US were supposed to arrive in Keflavík this morning. They will now fly to Iceland with a stopover in Glasgow. A plane with 180 passengers from Glasgow will land in Akureyri around 7 pm tonight.
