The Icelandic National Broadcasting Service, RÚV, reports that the Icelandic actress Aníta Briem is to star in a movie based on Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Center of the Earth.
According to RÚV, the movie is a re-make of an older movie based on the same novel. Shooting starts this summer and will mostly take place in a Hollywood studio. Although the beginning of the story is set at Snaefellsjökull, no scenes will be filmed in Iceland.
A movie filmed in 1959 based on Verne’s story also starred an Icelandic actor, Peter Ronson or Pétur Rögnvaldsson. According to the movie database imdb.com, Pétur was at USC on an athletics scholarship when the movie was about to be filmed. Through the producer’s son, he was offered a role in the movie. After appearing in Journey to the Center of the Earth, Peter was offered a long-term contract in Hollywood, but instead of pursuing a career in the movies Peter turned the offer down because “he felt that after making the movie he had no privacy and did not want to live a life in the public eye.”
