Icelandic actor on stage in London

Icelandic actor, director and entrepreneur Gísli Örn Gardarsson will star in the play A Matter of Life and Death, which will be premiered in the National Theater in London in May.

“This is just another adventure,” Gardarsson told Morgunbladid. “It will be interesting to work in this respected building that has so much history. I’m not aware of any other Icelander who has acted there.”

A Matter of Life and Death is based on a British film from 1946 about an army pilot who survives a plane crash. The plane crash was caused by a clumsy angel, whose character Gardarsson will interpret.

Gardarsson has worked with the director of the play, Emma Rice, previously. She directed the play Night at the Circus, which Gardarsson starred in and was staged at the Lyric Hammersmith Theater in London at the beginning of last year.

“She is an unbelievably skilled director and she creates really entertaining shows. That was a major factor in my decision [to play the role of the angel in A Matter of Life and Death],” Gardarsson said.

Gardarsson is currently directing the musical Ást (“Love”), which he wrote with Icelandic actor Víkingur Kristjánsson. It will premiere in Iceland on March 10.
