The six Icelanders who were fleeing from Lebanon, including a family with a four month old child are now at the residence of the Finnish ambassador in Damascus, Syria. The group had previously been left behind by a group of Norwegian buses. Alma Hannesdóttir, one of the group, said to mbl.is: “The Finns are handling these things infinitely better than the Norwegians yesterday. One can hardly compare the two.”
Later on, early Tuesday morning, it is planned to move the six Icelanders to the international airport in the city where an airplane from Iceland will carry them to Copenhagen. Már Thórarinsson, an airplane mechanic, said to mbl.is that the trip went well. The Finish bus had been in a convoy with some Germans and the group was delayed a bit becose the Germans were not completely organized.
“We are very happy to be here in Damascus because bombs were starting to fall within half a kilometer from us in Beirut when we met the Finns. “
