Icelanders Travel More than Ever

Icelandic travel agencies have never sold more tours to overseas destinations during the autumn and winter months than this year, and according to Icelandair, Iceland Express and Heimsferdir, the sale of tours will increase even more next summer.

High interest rates and inflation in Iceland do not seem to affect the locals’ travel budgets, Morgunbladid reports.

“We have, for example, doubled the supply of tours to the Caribbean since last year, which is a good indicator of increased interest in travel,” Andri Már Ingólfsson, CEO and the primary owner of Primera Travel Group, said.

Travel agencies have noticed that the traveling habits of Icelanders are changing.

According to CEO of Iceland Express Matthías Imsland, people now seem to take one long vacation per year spent in a foreign country and then two or three other shorter journeys over weekends, usually related to a special event or spent in one specific city overseas.
