Icelanders Start Traveling Again, Head for Boston

By Iceland Review

Before the banking collapse of last year, Icelanders frequently took weekend breaks to foreign shopping destinations in the autumn. Such trips almost came to a complete stop after the crisis hit but are now increasing again; Boston is the most popular city.

“This fall we felt a definite change,” Gudjón Arngrímsson, information officer at Icelandair, told Morgunbladid. “Then people started booking flights again for the traditional traveling time of October, November and December.”

Arngrímsson said people estimate where they can get the most for their money while booking flights and as the US dollar has been depreciating while the euro has been appreciating, the US has proven especially popular.

Many Icelanders also travel to New York and Seattle. In Europe, Stockholm, Glasgow and Manchester are popular shopping destinations.
