Icelandic residents were 321,857 on January 1, 2013, according to new information from Statistics Iceland, up by 2,282 individuals the year prior. Women increased by 1.4 percent and men by 0.03 percent.

On January 1, 2013, there were 78,168 nuclear families in Iceland, ruv.is reports.
The West Fjords saw proportionally the highest increase in population, by 77 individuals or 1.1 percent. Inhabitants in the capital region increased by 2,082, or 1 percent.
In two regions, the number of inhabitants dropped, by 28 in Northwest Iceland and by 36 in Suðurnes, Southwest Iceland.
