Icelanders are more numerous than ever, RÚV reports. A new report from Statistics Iceland puts Iceland’s population at 343,960 following an increase of 3,850 in the past three months. In this year’s second quarter, 1,000 children were born, with 550 deaths during the same period. Net migration was also positive, 4,420 migrated to Iceland, and 1,020 emigrated, a total increase of 3,400 people.
Of the 430 Icelandic citizens who moved abroad, most moved to other Nordic countries. `As far as the foreign citizens are concerned, out of 590, 150 emigrated to Poland. Immigrants with Icelandic citizenship came primarily from other Nordic countries, while immigrants with foreign citizenship came primarily from Poland and Lithuania. Foreign citizens in Iceland now total 34,460.
To put these numbers in a broader perspective, Iceland reached its 100,000th citizen milestone in 1926, 200,000 in 1968, and 300,000 on January 10, 2006.
