Icelanders in Nice Asked to Contact Family

Following the attack that killed at least 84 people in Nice last night, the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs asks Icelanders in Nice and vicinity to contact relatives as soon as possible, either by phone or via social media, RÚV reports.

A truck was driven a 2 km stretch along the boulevard Promenade des Anglais through a crowd of people, shortly after a fireworks show had ended. More than 100 people were injured, 18 of them seriously. Police stopped the deadly ride by shooting the perpetrator to death, according to RÚV.

If assistance is needed or if Icelanders in the area cannot be reached, the ministry advices people to contact its emergency phone number, +354 545-9900, which will be answered day and night. Nice is a popular destination among Icelanders, who are able to fly there directly by WOW Air.

The ministry’s staff members are on the alert, closely watching developments.
